Inshore Fishing

The term “inshore” describes the inland bodies of water (such as bays, bayous, creeks, and sounds) that are situated between the barrier islands and the mainland of NC. It is also known as the inlet to the ocean. These shallow waters remain calm on even the windiest of days. Fishing in this shallow water environment is a major plus for those feeling that they may be a bit less seaworthy, or for those who are more comfortable with still being able to see the shoreline. Inshore fishing is typically a smooth and comfortable ride to a secluded location to enjoy some laid back fishing. Drifting or being anchored are the preferred methods for this type of fishing. We typically catch fish that range from Flounder, Red Drum, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Spot, Croaker, Sea-Mullet, Bluefish, and numerous types of bottom fish.

Whether you are pursuing Redfish and Speckled Trout with a live bait, or more interested in top water lure fishing, Cutawhiskie Charters can accommodate you and your group with the unique light-tackle experience many people have come to expect from the Outer Banks fishing waters!!

Nearshore Fishing

The term “nearshore” means in the ocean, but a short distance from the beach – less than 15 miles but usually 300 yards to 8 miles offshore. The targeted species for nearshore fishing range from Bluefish to Spanish & King Mackerel, Cobia, Amberjack, Barracuda, Grouper, and yes, an assorted variety of Sharks! We have experienced hooking up to Atlantic Sharpnose, Tigers, Hammerheads and Blacktip sharks. Many of these fish average over 20lbs and can run in excess of 300lbs, as in the case of the mighty Sharks. Bait selection will vary widely to include both live and artificial baits used in a variety of ways. Balloon rigs, kite rigs, and live swimmers over several chum bags tend to draw lots of fish to the boat, however, bring plenty of sunscreen because sometimes it is a waiting game! The first few miles of warm, fertile waters of the Atlantic are some of the most bountiful in all of the east coast. We fish towers, shipwrecks, and will also cruise tidelines and grasslines looking for our targeted fish. Fish of all shapes and sizes call these waters home. Nearshore fishing trips are not deep sea fishing trips, but don’t for a moment, think this has any impact on the quality or quantity of fish caught. Big Cobia and Amberjacks will be targeted species unless SHARKS are what you want! In the Atlantic you never know what might come up and grab your bait!

About Captain Clay

Captain Clay is all about low stress and high fun when fishing with clients, family, and friends. He is extremely safety conscious and is patient with all levels of fishermen and fisherwomen! He loves to teach kids and grown-ups that want to learn how to become better anglers. Clay says, “fishing has always been something I love – fresh or salt-water! I live for those days on the water when everyone has a smile on their face, whether it’s from catching that one giant slob they’ve always dreamed of, or their excitement of non-stop fishing action which left them completely exhausted.” That’s what it’s all about to Captain Clay, at Cutawhiskie Charters.
